Interactive Short Course in Marine Biology

A unique Introductory Seminar course entitled “Interactive Short Course in Marine Biology” was held at the Asamushi Research Center for Marine Biology, Graduate School of Life Sciences, Tohoku University from August 28th to September 1st, 2016. The Center is located directly on the coast of the Mutsu Bay in Aomori prefecture. The course brought together small groups of Japanese and international students to learn together basic marine biology through interactive simple experiments using marine animals such as sea roaches and sea snails. In addition, they had the chance to learn by observing directly the sea urchin fertilization and early developmental stages as well as by classifying locally collected plankton samples. A total of seventeen Japanese and twelve international students from Tohoku University and the University of Tokyo participated in the course and enjoyed a unique learning and social experience in a camp-like environment in Asamushi. This 6-day long course conclude on September 2 at the Kawauchi campus in Sendai with presentations by all the participating students about their experimental results. This new course was organized through a collaboration between Profs. Martin Robert from IEHE, Gaku Kumano and Ayaki Nakamoto from the Asamushi center, Ian Gleadall from the Graduate School of Agriculture and Yasuyuki Matsuda from the University of Tokyo, and was supported by an IEHE educational development grant.
