Tenure-Track Assistant Professor, 2 positions
The tenure-track assistant professor will lead and drive research as the principal investigator. They will also mentor graduate students and serve as the main advisor for their thesis.

Description:
The Graduate School of Life Sciences is dedicated to advancing our understanding of life phenomena and contributing to the well-being of humanity. It brings together researchers working at various levels, from the micro (organic chemistry & molecular biology) to the macro (ecology & evolutionary biology). We are seeking early-career researchers who can drive interdisciplinary research across these levels and are expected to publish high-impact papers. Research Funding:    
Basic Research Funding of around 2,000,000 to 5,000,000 JPY will be provided annually.
Successfully candidates will be expected to secure additional external funding as well.
 
Qualifications:
Ph.D. upon taking up the post
 
Start Date:
November 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter
 
Term:
The term of appointment will be 7 years (reappointments not available). Candidates that successfully pass the tenure review conducted 5 years after the start of the appointment will be hired as a tenured associate professor. 
 
For those taking parental leave, the appointment term may be extended within limits to account for the leave period, provided it is deemed necessary to maintain research and education work.
 
Employment Type: Full-time
 
Compensation: 
  • Annual Salary System.
  • Transportation, housing, and dependent allowances may be provided depending on conditions.
  • Working hours: Discretionary Working System for Professional Work. Flexible Work Hours: As a basis, 8:30 – 17:15, but left up to the discretion of each employee.
  • Holidays: Saturday, Sunday, holidays prescribed by the National Holiday Act, the days from December 29 to January 3.
  • Insurance: Admission into the Mutual Aid Association of MEXT, Unemployment Insurance, Worker’s Compensation Insurance.
  •  Additional details will be governed by the Tohoku University Employment Regulations for National University Corporation Staff and other applicable regulations.

Faculty members of the Graduate School of Life Sciences have labs in both Katahira Campus and Aobayama Campus. In general, new members will have a lab in the same campus as their selected mentor.
 
Selection Process and Important Notes:
In order for candidates be able to conduct their own research, they must apply after choosing from a list of current full-time professor or associate professor to serve as a mentor. Applicants that successfully pass the document screening will be given an Application Checklist. Please go over this checklist with your mentor and submit it before your interview.
