- Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship
- Embassy Recommendation
Applications for this type of MEXT scholarship are made directly through Japanese embassies or consulates abroad. Scholars are recruited and initially screened by the Japanese embassy (or consulate, depending on the country). Because the application process varies depending on the country where the Japanese embassy is located, please contact the Japanese embassy or consulate general in your country for details.
Applicants who pass the preliminary screening conducted by their Japanese embassy should contact a faculty member of their choice (only after passing the preliminary examination at the embassy).
This scholarship provides: A monthly stipend of 146,000 yen (Master's program) or 147,000 yen (Doctoral program); Tuition waiver (full waiver) and Round-trip travel expenses
- University Recommendation (General Selection)
For this type of MEXT scholarship, the university selects and recommends research students directly to MEXT as scholarship candidates. Applications are usually accepted around December, with a deadline around January. Scholarship recruitment and payments begin at the time of enrollment.
However, only those planning to arrive in Japan in October are eligible for this type of MEXT scholarship.
This scholarship provides: A monthly stipend of 146,000 yen (Master's program) or 147,000 yen (Doctoral program); Tuition waiver (full waiver) and Round-trip travel expenses.
- Private Foundations' Scholarships
Some private foundations and other organizations in Japan offer scholarships for international students. These scholarships vary in terms of application procedures, eligible fields of study, and award amounts. In most cases, applications must be submitted through the university after enrollment.
Scholarships for International Students

Application guidelines will be released around February for April enrollment and around July for October enrollment.
・Recruitment starts from the first year of the DC program.
・Research Grant (living expense equivalent support): 180,000 to 200,000 yen/month.
・Research expenses: 340,000 yen/year.

- International Joint Graduate Programs
- Graduate Program in Data Sciences (GP-DS)
Application guidelines will be released around November for the April term and around June for the October term.
・Approximately 1-2 students each year. Acceptance starts one year after MC enrollment.
・RA salary: for MC approximately 100,000 to 130,000 yen/month; for DC approximately 100,000 to 170,000 yen/month.
・DC students are supported by the AGS RISE Program.
・Tuition waiver (varies by academic year)
- Neuro Global Internatioanal Joint Graduate Program (NGP)
Application guidelines will be released around October to November for the April term and around April to May for the October term.
・Approximately 5 students each year. Acceptance starts from October of the first year of the MC program.
・RA salary:
(1) Program candidates (first 6 months after acceptance): for MC approximately 90,000 yen/month,
(2) Regular program students (after candidates’ period): for MC approximately 110,000 yen/month, for DC: approximately 190,000 yen/month (*)
*For DC students, RA salary from NGP is provided only if student is not supported by the AGS RISE Program.

- International Joint Graduate Program in Integrated Chemistry (GP-Chem)
Application guidelines will be released around December.
・Approximately 10 students each year; Acceptance starts from the second year of the MC program.
・RA salary: for MC approximately 130,000 yen/month (varies by academic year).
・DC students are supported by the AGS RISE Program.
・Tuition waiver (varies by academic year).
- International Joint Graduate Program in Earth and Environmental Sciences (GP-EES)
Application guidelines will be released around November for the April term and around June for the October term.
・A few students each year; Acceptance starts from the second year of the MC program.
・RA salary: for MC approximately 130,000 yen/month.
・DC students are supported by the AGS RISE Program.
・Tuition waiver (varies by academic year)

- Advanced Graduate Program for Future Medicine and Health Care(JP)

・April admitted students: Recruitment starts before MC enrollment
・MC students are supported by RA employment (not a scholarship).
・DC students are supported by the AGS RISE Program.
・Tuition waiver (varies by academic year)
Application guidelines will be released around late January to early February.
・Master's Researcher (approximately 2-3 students each year): Application deadline: around April. Scholarship: approximately 600,000 yen/year.
・Doctoral Researcher (approximately 1-2 students each year): Application deadline: around February; Supported by the AGS RISE Program; Tuition waiver (varies by academic year)
- Global Hagi Scholarship
Application guidelines will be released around May for April admitted students and around November for October admitted students.
・Approximately 8 students each year; Acceptance starts from the second year of the MC program and the first year of the DC program.
・Scholarship: 600,000 yen/year.
Application guidelines will be released around February of the year before the recruitment year.
・DC1 (approximately 2-3 students each year) [paid for 3 years]: 200,000 yen/month.
・DC2 (approximately 3-4 students each year) [paid for 2 years]: 200,000 yen/month.
・Tuition waiver (varies by academic year)
- Research Assistant (RA) in the Graduate School
Approximately 10 students each year. [Target students will be decided around August and December].
・Paid to eligible DC students (*).
・Amount: approximately 80,000 to 120,000 yen (paid twice a year).
* The academic affairs section creates a list of eligible students based on the regulations of the Graduate School of Life Sciences.
- Research Assistants (RA) at the laboratory
It is possible to provide support through the RA salary from your supervising professor’s research funds. If you wish to advance to the doctoral course, please discuss this with your supervisor.
Students who find it difficult to pay admissions or tuition fees for financial reasons may be eligible for a partial or full waiver of admissions and/or tuition fees upon application and review. Please note that the application period for tuition waivers is very short.
* Non-degree Students are not eligible for these waivers.
(2024 academic year results)
First Semester: 19 MC students and 67 DC students for full waiver; 10 MC students and 6 DC students for half waiver
Second Semester: 25 MC students and 68 DC students for full waiver; 10 MC students and 3 DC students for half waiver
*Selection is made by the university headquarters based on household income and other factors, and applications may be rejected.
*In addition to the regular tuition fee waiver, a new system of "Waiver Support for Outstanding Students" has been established in 2022 academic year.
- Notes
When applying for international joint graduate programs, etc., you may be required to submit test scores for English proficiency tests (TOEFL® test, TOEIC® test, IELTS, etc.), so please try to take these tests on your own.
