Assistant Professor Takashi Makino of Graduate School of Life Sciences, Tohoku University in cooperation with Professor Aloife McLysaght of University of Dublin Trinity College has investigated the gene loss patterns of vertebrates, yeast, and plants which have experienced whole gene duplication and discovered that a deviation in gene loss occurs when genes that are functionally related exist in close proximity to each other. Also, the arrangement of genes in eukaryotes such as vertebrates, yeast, and plants were thought to be random but this research suggests that the arrangement of genes holds an important significance. The results of the research have been published on the American scientific journal Genome Research (Published in Advance Electronically).
