New signaling pathways involved in primary cilia formation

New signaling pathways involved in primary cilia formation

2013.04.11 15:38

A research group headed by Assistant Professor Shuhei Chiba and Professor Kensaku Mizuno of the Graduate School of Life Sciences, Department of Biomolecular Sciences at Tohoku University has determined that protein kinase NDR2 is involved in the formation of primary cilia and succeeded in elucidating the new signaling pathways involved in primary cilium formation. The primary cilia are immotile, antenna-like sensory organelles protruding from the cell surface. Defects in ciliogensis are known as the possible cause for ciliopathies such as cystic kidney disease, retinal degeneration, and visceral heterotaxy.  It is hoped that the research results can lead to the further elucidation of the causes of these diseases. The results of this research were published in The EMBO Journal on March 20. The paper's title is "NDR2-mediated Rabin8 phosphorylation is crucial for ciliogenesis by switching binding specificity from phosphatidylserine to Sec15."
